Food Stamp Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility requirements for the food stamp program include:

  • Must be a United States citizen or legal alien
  • Must meet designated work requirements
  • Must meet resource limit(s): $3,000 for households with a member who is disabled or 60 years of age or older, or $2,000 for all other households
  • Must meet income standard(s)

Exemptions from work requirements are:

  • Persons under the age of 18 or older than 50 years;
  • Caretaker of dependent child under the age of 18 or incapacitated person of any age;
  • Persons who have applied or are currently receiving unemployment compensation;
  • Physically or mentally unfit for unemployment;
  • Participants in a drug addict/alcoholic rehabilitation program;
  • Employment, training and education program participants under TANF;
  • Eligible students enrolled at least half-time in any recognized school, training program or institution of higher education;
  • Pregnant; or
  • Persons employed a minimum of 30 hours per week or receiving earnings equal to the minimum hourly rate under the Fair Labor and Standards Act, multiplied by 30 hours.
