In order to improve the effectiveness of the electronic transmission of health information, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) mandated the adoption of standard unique identifiers for health care providers. These identifiers are referred to as National Provider Identifiers (NPI). OHCA and EDS are currently offering provider training regarding changes related to NPI. Three-hour training sessions are currently being offered for both medical and non-medical providers in locations statewide. Developmental Disabilities Services Division (DDSD) strongly encourages all providers to attend one of the training sessions. Additional information regarding the training as well as the required registration form is enclosed for your convenience. Providers of the following DDSD service types qualify as medical providers and should apply for an NPI:
