Both federal and state laws specify that assistance is available to those persons who meet certain conditions of eligibility. Receipt of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families has been restricted to a lifetime limit of 60 months, whether consecutive or not, effective October 1, 1996. The time limit can be extended when a hardship extension has been approved. • 1
