Anita B. Thomas, social services specialist II in Pontotoc County, was recognized Feb. 16 as the Area IV Employee of the Quarter for the FY10 second quarter.  

Wilson Seawright, Family Support Services field liaison, and Area IV Director Bill Wilson marked the event by presenting Thomas with a certificate and plaque, as well as a gift card and basket.

Thomas was nominated by one of her peers, a new Non-PA worker in Pontotoc County who observed her going above and beyond to answer her many questions and offer positive advice. 

“If she does not know the answer she can find it or direct me to someone who does know the answer," the worker wrote in her nomination. "She always returns her phone calls, and makes sure her client’s needs are met whether through OKDHS or another agency. Anita always has a positive attitude, and assumes the best intentions in people. She does not judge new clients based on past problems she has had with other clients. It makes it a lot easier for us other workers to deal with difficult clients and our own mistakes if we use Anita as a positive example.”

An example cited is that of an angry gentleman recently phoned Thomas on several occasions and was very upset during the call. Thomas handled the phone conversation in a way that calmed the client, but also informed him about policy. Thomas was very respectful, but firm, and did not escalate the situation.

“Anita sets a great example for all workers in all fields of OKDHS. She is very dedicated to her clients in making sure they get the attention and help they need, and is dedicated and supportive to all staff within and outside her unit. She makes sure to say something nice to me everyday.”

Area Director Bill Wilson said, “I personally have known a lot of Ms. Thomas’ relatives in Coal County for a very long time, and am in fact a neighbor of one of her aunts.
