County Director Sevilla Vance Named Rotarian of the Year in Poteau
County Director Sevilla Vance recently received the Rotarian of the Year 2008-09 award from the Poteau Rotary Club, but says she really should have given the club an award for all that its members do to help OKDHS and its clients in LeFlore County.
"It was really, really a nice surprise," Vance said when she received the award for "going above and beyond" during the changing of the gavel ceremony she helped coordinate.
She has been an event planner, fundraiser and weekly newsletter editor in addition to helping ensure the Rotary Club provided a dictionary to every third-grader in every school in the county.
"They (Rotarians) have really adopted me individually and adopted the agency as something they really care about," she said. "We have a really good partnership."
Vance said the club members helped build the structure for the Child Advocacy Center where child abuse exams are conducted.
"They got things donated and we got hammers and nails and physically built the structure," she said.
Vance said when some children in Western Oklahoma were moved to her area, club members took pickup trucks and trailers and moved all their belongings from across the state.
"All I have to do is go to a meeting and ask and they really come through for me," she said. "When Director Howard Hendrick was visiting an office in Poteau, he visited the club and got up with (a club member) and sang for the club. He saw how special these men - and women - are."
