Comanche County staff were surprised when they received a call from Ft. Still officials with an offer of furniture to benefit OKDHS clients. But they quickly organized so they could pick up the items that were generously donated.
The base officials said they were refurbishing living quarters at the military post and had beds they would provide free of charge as long as OKDHS staff could pick them up, explained Deborah Almanza-Hardzog, OKDHS child welfare specialist.
Child Welfare worker Hope Porche and Family Support worker Phyllis Pack organized and coordinated the pick up.
More than 80 wooden captains beds with drawers and mattresses were provided to families at no cost thanks to this generous offer, Almanza-Hardzog said.
Arrow Trucking Company volunteered a moving van and driver while Teen Challenge of Oklahoma students and staff volunteered to load and unload the beds at the Comanche County Human Services Center.
Many OKDHS employees volunteered to help distribute, load and ensure the beds were picked up by the families. Several staff even contributed their own money to provide morning donuts and drinks, as well as lunch for all volunteers.
