As we approach Christmas and the holiday season itself, giving is probably at the forefront of most everyone’s mind. It is a time when we are reminded of the important things in life like family, friends, etc. When we hear familiar phrases like “It’s better to give than to receive” and “Remember the reason for the season," we are often moved to give our best to those we love and to reach out to those who are less fortunate than ourselves.
Giving reaps many benefits. Besides making us feel good, there is a special kind of joy which comes to the receiver as well as to us, the giver. When we give of ourselves, our time and our substance we often experience greater levels of happiness and overall fulfillment. It is even believed that giving can be a stress reliever.
In light of today’s economy, you are perhaps saying to yourself, “I want to give but I simply do not have it and that’s causing me more stress." I can understand that feeling but I am also reminded of the familiar saying, “Some of the best things in life are free." In terms of money, genuine giving doesn’t have to cost us anything. In fact, the following is a list of gifts we can give everyday without them ever costing us a penny:
- Always give one of your most special gifts – your smile. Not only will this cheer others up but it will also cheer you up.
- A positive attitude is a gift. It will rub off on those around you. Imagine them carrying that attitude to those they meet. This has the potential of being passed on to the next and the next and the next ...
- Choosing to help others is a gift. An example of this could be helping a mother with the door at the supermarket when she is trying to manage the shopping cart and her child/children at the same time. I believe this could make all the difference to that mother’s day.
- Giving compliments to friends, family, co-workers is a gift. Words of encouragement can be the catalyst to turning a negative situation around.
- Calling a relative or friend you have not seen in a while can be a much appreciated gift. Don’t wait for them to contact you first.
- Laughter is a priceless gift! Meet with your friends regularly and have good long chats with them. Share a few amusing stories to make each other laugh.
- An attitude of gratitude is a gift. Give thanks for everything you have in your life. Also, remember to thank others when they do something kind for you.
Last but not least, fellow OKDHS employees; you are a GIFT to many! Because service is our business, it is often easy to underestimate the impact you are making on the lives of customers, both internal and external. Through your daily best efforts, hope is being extended to many who have little to no hope. You may not hear “Thank-you” or “You are a valuable asset” as often as you deserve but be encouraged, you are appreciated! Your efforts are not in vain; you are making a difference!
Remember, small acts of kindness and caring, done willingly, can reap lasting results. Adopt them as a lifestyle and I believe they will enhance your life as well as the lives of those you touch.
