OKLAHOMA CAPITOL -- From the Spanish explorers who, centuries ago crossed the land that would become our state, to the diverse and distinct groups of Hispanic Americans whose growing population segment makes then an integral part of the cultural engine that will drive our state forward, Latinos have had a major impact on Oklahoma’s past, present and future.

These accomplishments and our shared history as Oklahomans will be recognized during the Oklahoma Latino Heritage Celebration.  The celebration will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Oct. 11 in the State Capitol Rotunda.  In honor of the celebration, Gov. Brad Henry has proclaimed October as Latino Heritage Month.

Scheduled to appear are Mexican and Guatemalan Folkloric dancers, Salsa Dancers from SalsAmerica Dance Company and OKC Salseros and singers Stephanie Peña and Anita and Bernadette Martinez.

The keynote speaker will be Latino community supporter and attorney Michael Brooks-Jimenez.  Honored guests include Lt. Gov. Jari Askins, Rep. Al Lindley, Rep. Richard Morrissette and Yolanda Charney and Giovanni Perry with the Governor’s Advisory Council on Latin American and Hispanic Affairs.

There will also be awards given to students from Oklahoma City Public Schools who entered the Latino Heritage Essay Contest.

Admission is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to help continue this annual event.  The Latino Heritage Celebration is the largest state-sponsored event recognizing the contributions of Hispanic American to the state and is sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS), Oklahoma City Public Schools, Riverside Latino Community Development Agency and the Salvation Army Puerta De Oro.
