Latino Heritage Celebration 2005 Set for Oct. 14

OKLAHOMA CAPITOL --- The halls of the State Capitol will come alive with the sounds of traditional Latin music during the Oklahoma Latino Heritage Celebration.

The celebration will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Oct. 14 in the Oklahoma Capitol Rotunda. The Oklahoma Latino Heritage Celebration is the largest state-sponsored event recognizing the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the state.

Scheduled to appear are Folkloric dancers from Columbus Elementary School, Salsa and Flamenco dancers from Everything Goes Dance Studio, Panamanian Folkloric Dancers Entre dos Mares and Mexican Folkloric dancers Las Estrellas, Adelita Dixon and Jaime Fuentes and Jose’ and Elvira Munoz.

The keynote speaker will be David Castillo, president of the Oklahoma City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Honored guests include members of the Governor’s Latino Advisory Counsel, legislators and Oklahoma Department of Human Services Director Howard H. Hendrick.

There will also be awards given to from Oklahoma City who entered the Latino Heritage Essay Contest. The essays will be on display at the Capitol during the celebration. And a special recognition award will be given to El Nacional newspaper for 18 years of service to the Hispanic community.

Admission is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to help continue this annual event. The Oklahoma Department of Human Services, Oklahoma Arts Council, Oklahoma City Public Schools and the Riverside Latino Community Development Agency sponsor this annual event.
