Installation of Cisco VPN Client

The Cisco VPN client is an interim solution. It will be replaced by Juniper in an upcoming phase of the Mobility Project. The old Nortel VPN client must be removed before installation of the Cisco VPN client. This document contains instructions on removal of the Nortel VPN Client, installation of the new Cisco VPN Client, and connecting to the OKDHS network once installed.

 

A VPN client is required in order to connect to the OKDHS network through an  internet connection external from the OKDHS network.  This client will not function if you are already connected to the OKDHS network.

(This installation also requires that the logged on user has local administrator privileges on the workstation. If you are not an administrator on the workstation, call the Data Services Division (DSD) Help Desk at (405) 325-8400 local, or 1-(800)-522-0223 statewide, and have them put you in “Mr. Fixit.”)

Step 1: Remove the "old" Nortel VPN client

Go to “Start,” ”Settings,” ”Control Panel,” “Add or Remove Programs.”

Scroll down and find VPN Client (Program list is alphabetical. VPN is near bottom) If VPN Client is not listed, please skip to step 2.

Select the "Change/Remove" button

This window is asking the user if he or she wants to completely remove the selected application. "OK" is highlighted.



Select "OK" on the Confirm File Deletion window

This window shows the InstallShield Wizard that removes the selected program. The Wizard prompts for a restart of of your computer.



The “InstallShield Wizard” will proceed to remove the program.

The Wizard will prompt for a restart.  Verify that the “yes” radio button is selected and click “Finish.”

Step 2: Install "new" Cisco VPN client

Create a new folder on the C:\ drive and name it “VPN Deployment Package”

Go to the OKDHS Internet Web site “Library: Downloads and Plug-ins

There are 2 files that need to be saved to the new folder on the C: drive.

  • One is labeled “Cisco VPN client for Microsoft Windows XP and Vista”
  • The other is labeled “Cisco VPN configuration file”


Copy both of these files to the folder “C: \VPN Deployment Package.” You will need to remember and define the path to this same folder during configuration later during step 3.

Open the folder “C: \VPN Deployment Package.”

The folder will now contain the files vpnclient-win-msi-5.0.01.0600.k9.exe and OKDHS-IPSec.pcf.

This window shows the vpnclient-win-msi-5.0.01.0600-k9.exe application. The install will start with the opening of the WinZip Self-Extractor.



It is advised to close any other Windows programs that may be running.

Double click on vpnclient-win-msi-5.0.01.0600-k9.exe. The install will start with the opening of the WinZip Self-Extractor.

This window shows the unzip file window. The user will be asked unzip the vpnclient-win-msi-5.0.010600-k9.exe file.


Accept the default settings and click the “Unzip” button.

The WinZip Self-Extractor will report that 12 file(s) unzipped successfully.

This window shows the user how many files were successfully unzipped.


Select the “OK” button.

The installer will continue with the install.  Select the “Next” button when the following screen appears.

This window shows the welcome window to the Cisco Systems VPN Client 5.0.01.0600 Installation Wizard.


 

This window shows the license agreement for using the VPN Client software.



Select the “I accept the license agreement” radio button.  Select “Next.”

This window asks the user to select a destination folder in which to put the application.



When the “Destination Folder” window appears, leave the default setting for the folder and select “Next.”

This window lets the user know the application is ready to be installed.



Select "Next" on the "Ready to Install the Application" window.

This window shows the progress of the installation of the Cisco Systems VPN application.



Several "Updating System" screens with their time bars will appear like the example above.

This window shows the Cisco Systems VPN Client 5.0.01.0600 has been successfully installed.



The final screen will appear and prompt for "Finish" Select the "Finish" button.

This window tells the user he or she must restart their computer before configuration changes will be made.


Select on “Yes” when the installer screen tells you to restart your computer.

Log on to the computer and then go to “Start,” “Programs,” “Cisco Systems VPN Client."  Right click on “VPN Client,” left click on “Send To,” then left click on “Desktop (create shortcut)”

This window shows the path for creating a shortcut to the remote desktop connection on your desktop.



This puts a shortcut on your desktop to the VPN client.    This window shows the VPN Client shortcut icon created on the user's desktop.

The client install is complete but must be configured for access to OKDHS.

Step 3: Configure the Cisco VPN client

Double click on the "VPN client" on the desktop.

This window shows the user which buttom to select. The import button is the third button.



Select the "Import" button. (This step will not be required for future sessions.)

This window shows the folder list on the local drive and which folder to choose. The folder is named VPN Deployment Package.



Double click the VPN Deployment Package folder (Refer to step 2 for location)

This window shows the user which file to select. The file name is OKDHS-IPSec.pcf.



Double click OKDHS-IPSec.pcf file.

This window lets the user know the VPN connection entry was successfully imported.



Select "OK"

Configuration is now complete.

Step 4: Making the VPN Connection

Connection to OKDHS via VPN can now be accomplished by clicking the "Connect" icon in the toolbar.    This window shows the user the icon to use to connect to the OKDHS network via VPN.



This window shows the user they are not currently connected to the OKDHS-IPSec.



After a few seconds, the User Authentication screen will appear.

This window shows the application prompting the user to authenticate their information before gaining access.



Complete the login with your Username and Password and select "OK."

Once the connection is complete, the VPN client icon  This window shows the VPN Client shortcut icon created on the user's desktop. It will also display in the user's system tray.  will be added to the system tray at the bottom of the screen. This lock icon now replaces the "older" Nortel icon that VPN users have used in the past.

This window shows the location of the VPN icon on the system tray.



To end your VPN session, double click on the VPN icon and the status screen will appear. Click on the "Disconnect" button.    This window shows the VPN Disconnect Icon.

This window shows they user they are currently connected to OKDHS-IPSec.



The bottom text line will shortly say "Not connected." Close the status screen.

This window shows the user they are not currently connected to the OKDHS-IPSec.
