Oklahoma Court Appointed Advocates for Vulnerable Adults Assoc., Inc. (OCAAVAA, Inc.)

OCAAVAA, Inc. advocates for the best interests of vulnerable adults (seniors 60 years and older and persons older than 18 with developmental disabilities) within Oklahoma's courts. It is a part of the Legal Services unit within Aging Services Division.

Example of Service:

Betty is an Oklahoma senior. She is 85 and has been living on her own. She had a stroke and cannot speak or move well. Betty wants to return home, but realizes she may need help when she gets there. Without her knowledge or input, Betty's family has decided that her daughter, Kim, needs to become her guardian. Kim and the family feel mom should go to a nursing home, but they know she would never agree to go. She has a lot of money, and they do not feel she can handle her finances or live alone now. None of the children feel able to care for her. A guardianship hearing has been arranged through the court clerk. No one has spoken to Betty about the hearing. She has a legal right to notification. What went wrong?

OCAAVAA, Inc.:

  • Believes that all individuals are entitled to a life of dignity with independence and self-determination for as long as possible;
  • Ensures a person's rights are protected (like Betty). The advocate will make sure that the court is aware of any rights violations.
  • Trains and prepares volunteer advocates to act as guardians ad litem for persons (such as Betty) in court hearings, representing the person's best interest and wishes
  • Acts as the eyes and ears for the court, so that judges can make the best and most informed decision
  • Encourages and provides assistance to local communities to develop and support volunteer advocates in court proceedings for vulnerable persons who are at risk of being abused, neglected or exploited in court proceedings; and
  • May also provide needed supports, allowing problems to be resolved without court intervention. (For example, Betty may be eligible for the ADvantage program, which would allow her to get needed care in her own home.)
