The Investigations Unit of the Office of Inspector General (OIG) serves a law enforcement role within OKDHS.
The administrative headquarters and a field office are co-located in Oklahoma City. Other field offices are located in Tulsa, Lawton, McAlester, and Muskogee. Another field office will soon open in Enid.
During the fiscal year 2009, agents closed 156 cases with prosecution, 142 cases with administrative disqualification hearings, 611 cases with voluntary repayment agreements or voluntary disqualifications, 151 cases with recoupment, and 2,361 cases with other causes.
The unit's work resulted in $2,719,731.51 in restitution or recovery of fraudulent payments with an additional $1,681,660.00 in projected savings to OKDHS programs during fiscal year 2009.
Most OIG fraud agents have professional law enforcement-related degrees, and the average fraud agent has 21 years experience in police work or law enforcement.
In 1993, the Oklahoma Legislature authorized the OKDHS Director to commission OIG agents as peace officers, with the authority to carry firearms. As peace officers, the agents are required to achieve and maintain certification from the Oklahoma Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training.
