George Earl Johnson Jr. is Director of Communications for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, a $1.7 billion state agency with nearly 8,000 employees, serving tens of thousands of Oklahomans daily.
As an award-winning communicator, Johnson has been with the Department for 28 years and has served in a number of public relations and photojournalistic positions before being named public relations director in December 1994 and communications director in 2002.
Johnson served as Director of Public Relations for three years at Rose State College, in Midwest City, Okla., before joining the Department in 1980. While there, he also taught mass communications and journalism before joining the executive staff at the college. Concurrently, he was director of the college's publications lab for three years.
Johnson is a Vietnam era veteran. He is heavily involved in church, leading adult Bible study classes, and in a number of civic activities, when he is not working to support one of the companies owned by his family.
Johnson is active in the community serving on the Board of Directors of Oklahoma Goodwill Industries, Inc., and Deaconess Hospital Health Systems. He is in his 21st year of service as a community invest volunteer with the United Way of Central Oklahoma.
Johnson has degrees in journalism and mass communications, public relations, with minors in human relations, the sciences and business. He has extensive training in business and leadership development. He has been married to his wife, Birdie, for 39 years and they have 1 adult son, George III, who is married and has 2 children.
